Strategic Heavy Bomber Aircraft Capabilities of Superpowers!

By Sherazur Rahman

Russia’s current strategic bomber fleet is diverse and robust, but it is mostly Cold War-era. During that time, the Soviet Union developed bombers to compete with American designs. For instance, the Tu-95 Bear was designed to rival the B-52 Stratofortress, while the Tu-160 Blackjack aimed to take on the B-1 Lancer.

After the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, this competitive landscape shifted. When the United States introduced the fifth-generation B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, Russia struggled to produce a comparable aircraft.

The U.S. Air Force has about 74 B-52H Stratofortress bombers, 44 B-1B Lancer bombers, and 19 B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. The B-2 Spirit became operational in 1997 and remains a crucial part of America’s stealth strike capability.

To tackle the challenges of the 21st century, the U.S. has already test-flown the sixth-generation B-21 Raider stealth bomber. This aircraft is expected to enter service between 2026 and 2027. The B-21 will gradually replace the B-2 Spirit, with plans to add nearly 100 units to the fleet.

Russia operates around 42 Tu-95 Bear bombers, 66 Tu-22M3 Backfire bombers, and 15 Tu-160 Blackjack bombers, which are key to its strategic bomber force. Moscow is modernizing the Tu-160 into the Tu-160M variant and plans to add at least 10 new units by 2030 to 2035.

Compared with the U.S. and Russia, China’s heavy bomber fleet is smaller. The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) runs approximately 200 updated H-6 bombers, which can carry cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons.

Since 2016, China has been developing the H-20 stealth bomber, designed as its first genuine long-range strategic stealth aircraft. However, the H-20 has not yet entered service.

In the 21st century, strategic heavy bombers are no longer mere symbols of military power. They play a significant role in global security and the balance of power among superpowers. The United States is progressing with next-generation stealth bombers, Russia is updating its Cold War fleet, and China is steadily enhancing its capabilities to secure its place in the world.
